I met up with one of you recently at a convention, and apparently you're all in sec three already! OMG, how time flies!

I hope everyone is doing well, and studying hard. Do persevere, no matter what class you got into. As long as you believe in yourself and work hard, anything is possible.

I havent changed my email address. Its still fazylah at gmail dot com, so if you ever want to contact me, do drop me a line.

In the meantime, I have been posted to Admiralty Secondary School, and will be using this LJ to post relevant stuff for my current students (sec 1 lit, sec 2 lit, sec 2 history). Feel free to unsubscribe if it doesnt interest you. (And feel equally free to continue to subscribe if it does!)

Wednesday morning at five o'clock as the day begings
Silently closing her bedroom door
Leaving the note that she hoped would say more
She goes downstairs to the kitchen clutching her hankerchief
Quietly turing the backdoor key
Stepping outside she is free.
She (We gave her most of our lives)
is leaving (Sacraficed most of our lives)
home (We gave her everything money could buy)
She's leaving home after living alone
For so many years. Bye, bye

Father snores as his wife gets into her dressing gown
Picks up the letter that's lying there
Standing alone at the top of the stairs
She breaks down and cries to her husband

Cosplay tutorial

1)What is cosplay?
According to wikipedia, cosplay is a Japanese subculture centered on dressing up as characters from manga, anime and video games.

2) So, I want to cosplay for the Learning Fest. Where do I start?
Easy. You can cosplay any character you want from any manga, anime or game. Here are some simple steps you can follow to start you on your cosplay journey.

a) Identifying a character to cosplay
You can cosplay any character from a manga/ anime/ game.
(Refer to MLG for more detailed guidelines).

Some questions you might want to ask yourself are:
-What character do I like? (Its always more fun to cosplay your favourite characters.)
-What character do I look like? (The look-alike factor can go a long way to making a cosplay more believeable. )
-Which character can I pull off? (Eg: Given my timeframe and budget, can I really create that costume from scratch?)

b) Researching a character
Find some pictures of your character. You can use anime artbooks, screencaps, figurines, wallpapers, and even other cosplayers as your reference points. (Alternately, you can come down to Cosfest on the 5th and 6th July to check out the cool cosplayers!)
From your research, figure out what you will need. How do the clothes look like? What is distinctive about the outfit? Does the person use any accessories? What kind of footwear would be suitable? What is the character's hairstyle?

c) Creating a costume
i) Tailoring an outfit.
This option is great if you have both the time and the money to do so. But no tailor will make a costume in time for Learning Fest so I wont bother talking about it. ^^

ii) Buy an outfit.
This will save you a lot of time, but it might cost quite a lot of money. Here are a list of cosplay-friendly shops.

Costumes:
Pan in the box - Chinatown point
Otaku House - Suntec my.playground
Haru - Far east Plaza

Wigs:
People's Park Complex. The wig shop is on the 2nd or 3rd floor, near the lift. The wigs they sell are suitable for cosplay as they come in many colours and styles. Average cost is $40. They generally have resale value at cosplay forums.
Toys R Us. They sell cheap halloween-standard wigs. The is not quality is quite poor but that is okay if you dont expect to use it more than twice. Wigs sell for about $10.
Far East Plaza. A number of shops there sell wigs, but don't buy there. They sell halloween-quality wigs at cosplay prices. :(

iii) Buy a second hand outfit.
This saves you both time and money! Singaporean cosplayers tend to be active at Sgcafe.com, so you might want to check out the sgcafe cosplay market. Many cosplayers sell their second-hand costumes and wigs there, so you can get them for a fraction of the cost price. :) You will need to sign up as a member (it's free) before you can contact the sellers.

iv) Improvise!
This is great if you have NO time and NO budget!
Can you alter a This Fashion skirt to make it resemble your character's?
Can you use poster colours and paint a new design on an old t-shirt?
Can you borrow your sister's shoes?
Can you "steal" your mom's makeup?
How about props made from cardboard/ styrofoam?
Be creative! The sky's the limit!

d) Portraying a character
Now that your costume is all set, all you need to do is to wear it to Learning Fest!! Remember to stay in character, and have fun!

3) Some other cosplay-related websites

Anime Wallpapers has tons of wallpapers, fanart and scans of offical artwork.
Cosplay.com is a worldwide database of cosplayers. You can view pictures of cosplayers and have your cosplay questions answered in their forums. Extremely noob-friendly.
SgCosplay is a local cosplay forum. You can get to know local cosplayers, buy from local cosplay merchants, and get second-hand cosplay items here. Its not very noob-friendly, but the marketplace is useful for fuss-free, local transactions.
Hexlord's photo gallery. One of the best local cosplay photographers.
Sgcafe's cool cosplayers thread features some of the best cosplays in the world.

Note: Please choose your character wisely and bear in mind that this is a school event. Overly suggestive or provocative outfits will be dealt with by the discipline committee.

Haha, yes, the MYEs are finally here, and I hope all of you do really well.

Something which I learnt from today: Revision Packs are a Good Thing. I didn't think that you will have so many questions to ask because I assumed that you would have gotten all those questions answered when revising from your English notes and English file.

So for the final year exams, I'm going to compile a Revision Pack for you, so that you can get everything quickly and concisely.

Whatever it is, I hope you do well for all your subjects! We have faith in you: don't let us down, okay! Haha.

Hi all!

Since Ms Fazylah is addicted to blogging, and you guys aren't filling in your English Journals anyway, I'm having you create an English Livejournal instead.

We'll see how this works out.

Obviously, you will need to follow the school rules with regard to online blogging.
1) no bitching about real people [if you do, at least be smart enough to come up with pseudonyms for them].
2) no posting up of embaressing/ potentially damaging material.

MYrules
1) All of you will need to have an lj account.

2) All of you will need to sumbit your lj username to me.
You can use your personal lj account if you already have one and add your English Journal entries to your personal lj, or you can create a whole new lj account specially for the English Journal. Either way is fine by me, as long as i can identify you when you post in your English Journal.

3) For the sake of privacy, you can choose to lock some parts of your journal so nobody else can read it. If you are locking your journal, you MUST make sure that ms_fazylah can access your English Journal posts. (If you are unsure how to go about it, look for me after school with your TPC and I'll show your how.)

4) No matter how "uncool" it is, English Journal posts must be written in gramatically correct English.

5) The English Journal has two components: Lesson Reflections and Journal Writing. Lesson Reflections must be posted at least once a week, and Journal Writings must be posted at least once every two weeks.

Lesson Reflections should include:
a) What you have learnt in English lessons that week.
b) What you should have learnt in English lessons but did not understand.
c) What you think should have been taught, but was not covered in lessons.
d) What you enjoyed about English lessons that week.
e) What you hated about English lessons that week.
f) (optional) complains or constructive criticism about the lessons that week.

Journal Writing:
Journal writing is less structured. It is basically a space for your to express your thoughts about anything in particular. (I will elaborate on this is class)
